Growing Family (Web Nursery)

Obstetrics Department
The Obstetrics Department at Jersey Community Hospital was born in August, 1954 at its Pine Street location. Our first baby arrived at 12:15 a.m. on August 11, 1954.

In 1977, the Obstetrics Department opened at the new, and present, Jersey Community Hospital site at 400 Maple Summit Road. In 1984, we welcomed a "new addition" which included two, larger nurseries as well as additional patient rooms.

Since August 11, 1954, there have been over 14,000 babies born at Jersey Community Hospital. We have welcomed 122 sets of twins and one set of triplets. The largest baby born weighed 12 pounds 9 3/4 ounces and the smallest infant to survive weighed less than 2 pounds.

LDRP Rooms
Couples have the opportunity to deliver in an attractive, homelike LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Post-Partum) room. These rooms accommodate the birthing process from labor throughout your stay and includes newborn care. Most complications can be managed in these rooms, with the exception of Cesarean Section, which are performed in the operating room.. Once your baby is born and you are getting to know each other, you will be guided through the learning process of caring for your newborn by our caring, family-focused nursing staff.

Because the birth of your baby is a special blessing, we celebrate each new arrival with "Brahm's Lullaby." The lullaby, played over the hospital public address system, invites everyone to share in the celebration of a new life.

Child Birth Classes

Many classes are offered to assist you during your pregnancy and your new child. These classes include:

Mother Massage-Couples Prenatal Massage Class
This prenatal massage class is offered to expectant mothers and their partner. All pregnant women develop aches and muscle strain during pregnancy. This class offers basic massage techniques which help relieve tension and enhance relaxation. The class is offered several times per year.

New Baby-Sibling Program
This program is designed to prepare young children for the arrival of a new brother or sister. The program is available on request and is a one session, two hour, Saturday event. This program is free if the new brother or sister will be born at Jersey Community Hospital or $10 if delivery is elsewhere.

Breastfeeding
This program emphasizes the advantages of breastfeeding for both mother and baby and provides getting started information. The class is offered on request and is a one-time, two-hour session. Also, all staff in our Obstetrics Department receive continuing breastfeeding education to provide you with quality assistance.

Breastfeeding classes are free to those delivering at Jersey Community Hospital or $10 if delivering elsewhere.

The Obstetrics Department at Jersey Community Hospital provides a Certified Lactation Counselor who is available to help with problems and answer questions.

Prepared Childbirth
There is so much to know about having a baby and with the constantly changing technology, even experienced moms may need a refresher course.

We offer a Childbirth Education Class that will assist you and complement your doctor's advice. Classes are taught by a trained, certified childbirth educator and provide understanding, support and information that will take you from pregnancy through the post-partum period and help you to adjust to the changes that occur during this special time.

Classes are offered each month in an all-day Saturday session and should be taken 4-8 weeks before your due date. Classes are free to those delivering at Jersey Community Hospital or $30 if delivering elsewhere.

Massage Class
This class instructs parents in the practice of newborn and infant massage. The goal is to instruct parents on massage techniques to enhance bonding and express their love. Massage can calm fussy babies and enhance infant development. Classes are available several times each year and intended for newborn babies to babies 7 months of age.

Pediatric CPR
This safety program is recommended for all parents, as well as grandparents and other care givers.

Certified CPR instructors will teach basic life support as well as infant and child safety.
